Speaker maestro Bowers & Wilkins has launched the new Music App to boost the Formation multi-room music experience.

Following a busy six months in the second half of 2020 which saw Bowers & Wilkins acquired by Sound United plus the release the 600 Series Anniversary Edition speakers and a Carbon Edition of its popular PX7 headphone, the renowned speaker manufacturer has launched a new Music App to enhance the functionality of its Formation range of products.

Released in 2019, the Formation suite of wireless products includes the Duo, Wedge, Bar, Flex and Bass speakers plus the Audio hub for connection of legacy devices.

Now, owners will be able to use the new Bowers & Wilkins Music App to access an increased number of music-streaming services with initial support for Qobuz, TIDAL, TuneIn, Dash Radio (in certain markets), NTS Radio and SoundCloud. Further subscription services and streaming platforms to be added in the coming months.

Available now in both Android and iOS formats, the Music App brings together content from each service into a single, user friendly interface which enables easier access to listeners' favourite tracks, albums, playlists and radio stations. A selection of curated Bowers & Wilkins playlists and personalized recommendations will make choosing the next artist or song a simpler experience too.

The existing Bowers & Wilkins Home App, which provides set up functionality for Formation-enabled products, will operate alongside the new Music App until later in the year when all control and streaming functions will be combined into the Music App and the Home app will be discontinued.

The Formation platform provides a range of functionality to enhance its multiroom capabilities including AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth aptX HD support for streaming from mobile devices along with integrated support for both Spotify Connect and Roon, plus Works With Alexa certification.

Bowers and Wilkins appears to be using its new status as part of Sound United to expand its development and engineering resources with significant recruitment in software and user experience skillsets. The company says there are plans to continue to invest in and expand the capabilities of its Formation-enabled product portfolio to both further improve the user experience and to add new features, including support for popular custom-installation control systems such as Control4.
